How to Surrender When You Feel Stuck: Achieving Your Goals When Nothing is Working
Surrender—one of the most powerful spiritual virtues we can master, but also one of the hardest! In my case, it requires all of my efforts and focus to surrender successfully.
But what it is? Well, spiritual surrender is the act of releasing control and trusting in a higher power to guide your life. It’s about not letting your personal likes and dislikes dictate what happens next. It’s about letting go of the need to force outcomes or dictate how things should unfold, and instead, aligning with the flow of the universe. Surrender doesn’t mean giving up on your desires or goals, but it means trusting that life is unfolding for your highest good, even when the path is unclear or challenging.
At its core, surrender is about faith—trusting in the Divine plan, allowing yourself to be guided, and embracing the present moment without resistance. It frees you from the burden of control and opens space for grace, intuition, and unexpected blessings to flow into your life.
I remember a time when surrendering was the last thing on my mind. I was pouring everything I had into growing my business. I’d set the vision, laid out the plans, and felt ready to move to the next level—but every door I knocked on remained shut. The opportunities I had hoped for seemed to vanish before me. I felt stuck, uncertain about how to proceed, despite having tried every possible angle to move things forward.
There was no question that I was giving it my all. I had exhausted every option I could think of, and still, nothing seemed to work. I found myself pushing harder, trying to force my way through doors that simply wouldn’t open. That’s when I realised that no amount of effort was going to change the fact that I wasn’t in control.
This was my personal crossroads with surrender. It wasn’t about giving up on my dreams or goals; it was about releasing the idea that I had to force everything to happen according to my timeline and my methods. I had to trust that even though I couldn’t see the way forward, a greater plan was unfolding, and all I had to do was lean into it.
You might look to surrender when:
• You’re feeling stuck or frustrated in your career, despite giving it your all, and nothing seems to move forward (yep, that was me!)
• A relationship feels tense or stagnant, and you realise you can’t control the other person’s choices or actions.
• You’re faced with a major life decision, feeling overwhelmed and uncertain, and you’re seeking guidance from a higher power.
• You encounter repeated setbacks while working toward a goal, and the path ahead feels blocked no matter what you do.
• You’re dealing with health challenges, and after trying every possible solution, you realise you need to trust the healing process and let go of control.
Surrender in these moments helps you release resistance, find peace, and allow divine guidance to flow into your life.
How Surrender Can Help When You Feel Like Nothing Is Working
Surrender can feel especially confusing when you’re in a situation where you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, and blocked—like you’re pushing so hard towards something you want, but no matter what you do, the doors remain shut. In times like this, the idea of “surrender” can seem like giving up or abandoning your goal. But surrender isnt about quitting; it’s about shifting your relationship to control, allowing space for greater possibilities to emerge that you might not yet see.
In my experience, here’s how surrender can help when you feel like nothing is working:
Releasing the Need for Force
When you’re stuck and frustrated, the natural response is often to push harder, to force things to happen, to find the answers. I’ve been there too—especially when I was trying to grow my business, feeling like I had to wrestle with every obstacle. But life doesn’t always respond to force. In fact, when we push too much, we often create more resistance. Surrender allows you to stop fighting against the current and flow with it instead.
Easing up on the pressure I placed on myself was a game changer. I learned to pause, breathe, and allow things to unfold. It was in those moments of surrender that I finally created space for new solutions or insights to arise—things I hadn’t considered before.
Trusting in Divine Timing
One of the most frustrating aspects of pursuing goals is wanting things to happen now. I know this all too well; when I desire something, I want it yesterday! It’s easy to feel like the universe is blocking us or that we’re failing. But surrender invites us to trust in divine timing—a timing that may be wiser than our own.
The obstacles I faced in my journey weren’t failures; they were detours meant to serve my highest good. Maybe there was something I still needed to learn or heal before the door opened. Surrender doesn’t mean abandoning your goal; it means trusting that it will come to you at the right time and in the right way.
Opening to New Possibilities
When we fixate on a specific goal, we often become blind to other opportunities that might be more aligned with our true path. I’ve experienced this firsthand, where my focus on one avenue made me overlook other doors quietly waiting to open.
Surrender allows you to release your attachment to how your goal is supposed to happen. Life may be leading you on a different, more meaningful path that you can’t yet see. By letting go of rigid expectations, you become open to possibilities you may not have considered. Sometimes, the very blocks you encounter are actually guiding you toward a new direction.
Finding Peace in the Process
Pursuing goals can be exhausting, especially when things don’t go as planned. I often felt drained and frustrated. Surrender offers a way to find peace even amid challenges. It’s about letting go of the constant mental struggle and returning to the present moment.
When I embraced surrender, I learned to relax into the process, knowing that not everything needed to be resolved immediately. I began to trust that I was still moving forward, even if it wasn’t visible yet. Finding peace in the journey opened up space for clarity and solutions to emerge.
Letting Go of Fear and Resistance
Often, what keeps us stuck is a deeper layer of fear—fear of failure or fear that things won’t work out. This fear can cloud our ability to see clearly or trust the process. Surrender invites you to let go of these fears and to trust that you are being guided, even through challenges.
In my own journey, releasing the belief that I must control everything was liberating. I shifted from a mindset of fear to one of trust and abundance, asking myself, “What if it’s all working out, even if I can’t see it yet?” Surrender dissolved the resistance that kept me stuck, opening space for the universe to flow in and work its magic.
Connecting to Your Intuition
When you’re constantly pushing, it’s easy to lose touch with your inner guidance. I found that the mental clutter of fear and worry made it harder to hear my intuition. Surrender quiets the mind and reconnects you with your inner wisdom.
In moments of surrender, I was able to step back from the noise and tune into my deeper knowing. By listening rather than forcing, my intuition could guide me to the next right step, revealing clarity that had previously eluded me.
Letting the Universe Meet You Halfway
Surrender is about inviting the universe to co-create with you. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to carry the full weight of your goals alone. There’s a divine intelligence ready to support you, but it can’t do so if you’re trying to control everything yourself.
Releasing my grip allowed me to trust that the universe was on my side, working behind the scenes in ways I didn’t yet understand. In surrender, I created space for miracles, synchronicities, and unexpected blessings to enter my life, revealing the beauty of the journey.
6 Steps To Surrender When You Feel Stuck
If you’re feeling stuck and unsure how to surrender, here are 6 steps that might help:
1. Acknowledge Your Frustration
First, give yourself permission to feel what you’re feeling—whether it’s frustration, fear, or disappointment. Surrender doesn’t mean ignoring these emotions; it means accepting them without letting them control you. Take a deep breath and acknowledge, “I feel stuck, and that’s okay.”
2. Release the Need to Control the Outcome
Let go of the need to control every detail of how things unfold. Trust that there may be forces at play beyond your current understanding. Say to yourself, “I release the need to control this. I trust that the right path will be revealed.” Breathe and relax. Try practicing the serenity prayer to shift your energy (see lower down in the post)
3. Focus on What You Can Control
While surrender involves letting go, it doesn’t mean inaction. Focus on what is within your power right now. Can you take a small step forward today, even if it’s something unrelated to your goal? Sometimes, shifting your energy can create movement where there was none before.
4. Stay Open to New Possibilities
Surrendering means remaining open to the idea that things might unfold differently than you expected. Ask yourself, “What am I not seeing? Is there another way this could work out that I haven’t considered?” Meditate with Archeia Serenity to help turn your fears into possibilities (see lower down in the post)
5. Trust in Divine Timing
Remind yourself that just because something isn’t happening now, doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Trust that the universe has a perfect timing for everything, and that your job is to stay aligned with that timing rather than forcing your own.
6. Find Peace in the Present Moment
Lastly, come back to the present. Often, the stress of being stuck comes from living in the future, worrying about what will or won’t happen. Surrender brings you back to the now, where you can find peace, even in the middle of uncertainty.
Surrender, in essence, helps you move from a place of struggle to a place of trust. It allows you to loosen your grip, to stop fighting the current, and to allow life to unfold in ways that might be beyond your current understanding. Even when the road seems blocked, surrender opens you up to new paths, new insights, and new possibilities that can carry you forward. Trust that by surrendering, you are aligning yourself with the flow of life, and that things will unfold in their perfect timing.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace;
Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that you will make all things right if I surrender to your will;
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
And supremely happy with you forever in the next.Amen.
The Serenity Prayer
The Serenity Prayer is a widely recognised prayer often associated with recovery and personal growth. It is typically attributed to theologian Reinhold Niebuhr.
The prayer emphasises the importance of accepting what we cannot control, finding the courage to change what we can, and developing the wisdom to discern between the two. It serves as a guiding principle for many seeking peace and strength in challenging situations.
I truly believe that the Serenity Prayer was a beautiful gift from the divine, possibly inspired by Archeia Serenity herself. It’s like a gentle nudge reminding us of the power of surrender in our lives. When we say the prayer, we’re not just reciting words; we’re opening ourselves up to a deeper connection with the universe.
Think about it: when we ask for the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference, we’re really embracing that balance between action and surrender. It helps us step back and trust that some things are simply out of our hands. Practicing this prayer can become a daily ritual, guiding us to let go of control and find peace when faced with chaos. It’s a warm reminder that it’s okay to pause, breathe, and just be.
In moments of stress or overwhelm, returning to this prayer can be so comforting. It reminds us that we’re supported, that there’s a bigger plan at play, and that surrendering can actually lead us to a more joyful and fulfilling path.
Archeia Serenity - The Archangel of Surrender
Whenever I feel that creeping fear—whether it’s about work, finances, health, or anything else—I turn to Archeia Serenity. I meditate with her, and it’s like she wraps me in a warm embrace, helping me transform that fear into love and possibility. I remember during the pandemic, I was facing a huge mountain of old debt—£15,000 that felt utterly overwhelming, especially when I wasn’t earning anything. I needed to find £660 each month, and despite my best efforts, nothing seemed to work. I felt hopeless and almost resigned to my situation.
That’s when I decided to reach out to Serenity in prayer. I started the process of dealing with debt recovery, but at the same time, I prayed and meditated and asked for her guidance. A few days later, at exactly 11:11 AM, I received an unexpected email from my mortgage bureau. They informed me that after four years, my mortgage was up for renewal, and I could remortgage for an additional £15,000! This meant I could cover my debt entirely without the monthly payment. It felt like a miracle, and I know it was Serenity who highlighted this solution—one I never would have imagined possible. It’s moments like these that remind me of the power of surrender and the beauty of trusting in divine support.

But how do I still achieve my goals, and manifest them, if I’m constantly surrendered? And how do I know when to take action and when to just back off and stop meddling?
I'm often asked this...and this is my (rather in depth) answer...
Surrender is Not Inaction, It’s Alignment
Surrender doesn’t mean giving up on your goals or sitting back, waiting for the universe to do everything for you. It means aligning your actions with the flow of life and releasing the need to control every outcome. You still take steps toward your goals, but you do so from a place of trust, openness, and responsiveness to divine guidance, rather than fear or control.
Imagine surrender as letting the current of a river carry you, but still paddling your boat when you feel inspired. The key is to trust the current (the universe) but also to listen for those moments when you feel guided to paddle (take action).
Listen for Inspired Action
The difference between action from control and action from surrender is that in surrender, you act when you feel inspired, not when you feel desperate or fearful. Inspired action comes from a place of inner knowing, flow, or excitement. It’s the intuitive nudge that says, “This feels right,” or “This is what I need to do next.”
When you are surrendered, you tune into these nudges and act on them, trusting that they are leading you in the right direction. These actions might not always make logical sense at the moment, but they come with a sense of ease or clarity. Inspired action often feels light or exciting, rather than heavy or pressured, there’s a sense of flow or synchronicity around it—things seem to align or doors open unexpectedly, and it feels aligned with your higher self or greater purpose, rather than driven by fear, ego, or control.
Questions to ask yourself:
• “Does this action feel aligned with my inner wisdom, or am I acting out of fear or frustration?”
• “Am I trying to force something to happen, or does this feel like the natural next step?”
Let Go of Micromanaging the Outcome
One of the biggest traps when pursuing goals is becoming obsessed with the how and the when. Surrender invites you to let go of the need to micromanage every step of the process. You don’t have to know exactly how everything will unfold—you just need to trust that the right steps will appear at the right time.
Surrendering here means that you release your grip on specific outcomes or timelines. You still hold the vision of your goal, but you allow the universe to guide you toward it in ways that may surprise you. The how is often not something we can control, and when we try to force it, we can create resistance or miss out on better opportunities.
How to let go of micromanaging:
• Hold your goal in your mind and heart, but let go of rigid plans or expectations about how it will come to pass.
• Stay open to new possibilities, even if they don’t match your original plan.
• Trust that delays, detours, or changes in the journey are often necessary to align you with something greater.
Trust Divine Timing
A big part of surrender is trusting that everything is unfolding at the right time. Sometimes, we want to rush the process, but the universe may be orchestrating events, experiences, or growth that we can’t yet see. Surrender means trusting that, even when things seem delayed or blocked, the timing is perfect.
However, divine timing doesn’t mean you do nothing while you wait. You continue to take steps toward your goal, but you trust that the universe will reveal the path as you go. If things feel stuck, it may be a sign to pause, reflect, and recalibrate, rather than pushing through in frustration.
If something isn’t flowing, take a step back and ask, “Is this the right time, or am I pushing too hard?” Trust that if a door isn’t opening right now, there may be something better in store or a lesson you need to learn first. Continue to prepare yourself—personally, spiritually, or practically—so that when the right moment comes, you’re ready to act.
Balance Between Taking Steps and Letting Go
Surrendering doesn’t mean you stop moving forward—it means you move forward with trust instead of control. You do what you can in the present moment and then release your attachment to the outcome. This is a dance between effort and allowing, between doing your part and letting the universe do its part.
You are co-creating with the universe. Your role is to take inspired action, while the universe handles the bigger picture. There’s a rhythm to this—sometimes you’ll be called to act, and other times you’ll be called to step back and trust. Surrender means recognising which moment you’re in and acting accordingly.
Signs it’s time to act:
• You feel clear, excited, or aligned with a specific action.
• Synchronicities appear, opening doors or showing you the way.
• There’s a natural flow to what you’re doing.
Signs it’s time to step back:
• You feel stuck, frustrated, or like you’re forcing something to happen.
• You’re getting blocked at every turn, with no clear solution.
• You feel mentally and emotionally exhausted, trying to control the outcome.
Practice Detachment
Detachment is one of the core principles of surrender. It means you remain committed to your goals but unattached to how or when they manifest. This might feel challenging because we naturally want things to unfold a certain way, but detachment frees you from the stress and pressure of having to control everything.
When you practice detachment, you stay focused on what you can control (your thoughts, actions, and energy), while releasing what you can’t (the timing, the exact outcome, and other people’s actions). This opens space for the universe to move and surprise you with even better results than you could have planned.
After taking action, consciously let go of any expectations about how things should turn out. Affirm that, “I trust the process. I release control and allow the best possible outcome to unfold. Cultivate gratitude and contentment with where you are now, knowing that everything is working for your highest good.
A Practical Approach to Manifesting with Surrender
Manifesting your goals while embracing surrender might feel challenging, but it can be a beautiful dance of intention and trust. Here’s a clearer guide on how to practice this, along with examples to illustrate each step.
1. Set Your Intentions Clearly
Take some quiet time to reflect on what you truly want. Write it down in a journal or create a vision board.
Example: Let’s say you want to attract a new job. Visualise your ideal role, the type of environment you want, and how it feels to be there. Allow yourself to get excited about this vision. Once you’ve captured this intention, let go of controlling every step to get there.
2. Take Inspired Action
Pay attention to moments when you feel a strong urge to act—these are often your intuition nudging you.
Example: If you’re drawn to update your CV or reach out to a former colleague for a chat, follow that impulse. Make sure your actions feel joyful or fulfilling, rather than driven by panic or desperation.
3. Pause When Needed
If you hit a wall or feel exhausted, take a break. Reflect on your feelings and what might be blocking you.
Example: Imagine you’ve sent out several job applications but haven’t received responses. Instead of pushing harder, step back. Take a walk, meditate, or do something you enjoy. This can help you recalibrate and surrender the pressure.
4. Stay Open and Flexible
Be willing to adapt your goals based on new insights or opportunities.
• Example: If a friend suggests a completely different job opportunity that you hadn’t considered, be open to exploring it. Sometimes the universe has a better plan than we initially envision.
5. Let Go of the Outcome
After taking action, consciously detach from how you think things should unfold. Affirm your trust in the process.
Example: If you’re waiting for interview results, remind yourself that you’ve done your part. You could say, “I trust that the right opportunity will come to me in perfect timing.” Consider writing down your feelings and then sealing them in an envelope as a symbolic gesture of letting go.
6. Celebrate Small Wins and Be Present
Acknowledge and appreciate the small steps you take each day. Practice gratitude regularly.
Example: After submitting an application or having a networking conversation, take a moment to celebrate that achievement. You could treat yourself to your favourite snack or jot down three things you’re grateful for in that moment.
By following these steps, surrender becomes a powerful ally in your manifesting journey. It helps you avoid burnout and frustration while opening space for creativity and divine timing. Remember, it’s all about balancing action with surrender, moving toward your goals with trust and joy, and knowing that you are supported by the universe every step of the way.
Here are some surrender journalling questions to help reflect on your relationship with surrender:
1. What fears or worries do I need to surrender right now?
2. How do I typically respond when things don’t go my way?
3. What does surrendering feel like in my body?
4. Can I recall a time when surrender led to a positive outcome? What did I learn?
5. How can I practice trust in the universe today?
6. What specific outcomes am I clinging to, and how might letting go change my experience?
7. In what areas of my life do I feel the need to control?
8. How can I incorporate daily rituals or prayers that support my surrender?
9. What signs or nudges have I received that I may have ignored?
10. How can I celebrate small wins and be present in my journey?
